Washington Co. Search & Rescue Seeks Volunteers

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Directly from the Washington County Sherif’fs office -

We have all watched the news and seen the dramatic events of Search and Rescue missions for lost or injured people unfold. What most people do not know is that frequently the rescuers are members of the Washington County Sheriff?s Explorer Post. This group of young men and women, age 14 to 20, have a strong desire to serve their community and to join in the experience of finding lost people.

For 42 years, the Sheriff?s Office has sponsored the Explorers. We have given hundreds of young men and women the chance to learn about a career in law enforcement and to participate in search and rescue missions. Explorers receive extensive training that is physically and mentally demanding. Many of the skills they learn will be useful throughout their lives.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining this elite life saving organization, then contact us today. Applications will be accepted until May 15, 2008.

Local Organizations Seek Location for Clothes Closet

Friday, March 28th, 2008

I know it doesn’t really seem on the surface like there is a very large population in Wilsonville who are in need of assistance when it comes to food, clothing, and shelter, but looks can be deceiving.

The fact of the matter is, the need in this community has been rising along with the population.

The one thing this community does not have is a good resource for clothing for low income folks.  For that reason, representatives of Wilsonville Community Sharing, The West Linn - Wilsonville School District,  and Clacakamas County Community solutions have been looking into creating a clothes closet.

The goal is to build a clothing resource for those with limited resources.

To begin with, discussions have included involving students and Community Solutions clients in the intake and processing of the clothing. Canby Kiwanis Thrift Store "has been very gracious in allowing us to learn from them," said one of the representatives.  The end vision at this time includes a program that will have a Retail Component, and a Voucher Component which would be implemented locally.

The one thing that is a sticking point currently is finding an appropriate location for the warehousing process, and perhaps separately, for distribution.  What I’m told is needed , preferably for donation, specifically is  a  dry facility with lights and heat, or the capability for it.

If you might have such a facility available contact Wilsonville Community Sharing with the information or with questions.

Wilsonville Music & Arts Fundraising Happening This Month

Friday, March 14th, 2008

The school district is holding it’s tenth annual $ for the Arts fundraiser in March. WLWV Music and Arts Partners (MAP) asks every K-12 family to donate a dollar or more, and all students benefit. Wood art, band, choir, drama and strings programs have received $16,500, and MAP has returned over $375,000 to arts programs in all district schools in the past 12 years. MAP, a volunteer, non-profit organization, works to fill the funding gaps for arts education in our school district.
Recent MAP support for Wood arts programs includes the annual MS Jazz Festival, a tenor sax, two video cameras for drama, the kiln and art room equipment plus the March 19 MS/HS Honor Choir Festival at Rolling Hills Church.
If you would like to support the program, send a check payable to MAP and mail to: 1378 Leigh Ct., West Linn, OR 97068 and mark it for Wood! Or secure a donation envelope in the Wood office. Thank you for
your support!

Applicant interviews are now being scheduled. Training begins April 15, 2008. For more information or an application, call 503-655-8616 or stop by the Victim Assistance office at 708 Main Street in Oregon City.
