Last Autumn I was driving along
“One of my initial ideas when I started at Wood was to incorporate life-long learning activities into the Wellness curriculum,” said Wood Middle School Wellness teacher Sarah Coffman. “Our students are so fortunate that they live in a state where they can get outside most of the year to stay physically active. I wanted to start small, with a program that most students already knew something about, so I chose biking.”
The little idea took hold, though, and began to grow.
“Another factor, in teaching the students biking, has been the whole sustainability issue,” Coffman continued, “we wanted to teach students about the effect driving has on our lives / well being and how easy it can be to hop on a bike to travel places instead. We are fortunate that Wilsonville is such a bikable community! So, we have started to talk about air pollution, traffic problems, transportation, etc. I see this becoming a pretty big unit as we continue to develop it”
Members of the community are getting on board the bicycling program as well. Wilsonville Kiwanis donated $500 to the program, Dr. David and his wife, Sue, Duemling at Wilsonville Family Chiropractic offered to donate $25 for each new patient they had in December and January. They’re challenging the community to participate in the bike donations as well.
The wellness teachers will likely be buying refurbished bicycles for the program. Thirty bikes are needed for the class, and ultimately, they want to give students who participate in the class but don’t have one, a bike, according to Cindy Garrison with the West Linn –
