Washington Co. Sherriff Seeks Explorer Applicants
You may remember the movie "Ghost Busters" and the famous line "Who you gonna call?" When a hiker, fisherman, hunter or any person is lost, a plane goes down in an unknown location, or evidence needs to be located in a remote area - "Who you gonna call?" Your Sheriff’s Office Explorer Search and Rescue Team.
Explorers are young men and women, age 14 to 20 years, who have gone through extensive and difficult training. Explorers used to be affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. However, for several years now they have been affiliated with Learning for Life, a non-profit organization of its own, which you can learn about at www.learning-for-life.org. Many schools give credit toward graduation for students who participate in this program.
Those who apply and are accepted must complete a 12-day full emersion training camp academy. The academy is in a wilderness park-like setting. Each day fills a full 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. structured schedule. The candidates sleep in tents, eat in a chow hall, attend classroom lectures, and participate in outdoor training. (There is hot and cold running water and other indoor plumbing.)
The camp is fenced, gated and secure. Adult supervisors are present day and night. There is at least one female supervisor present at all times along with either an EMT or nurse. All the instructors and other adults are from Sheriff’s Offices.
Candidates have a one-time $125 fee to partially defer the cost of food and uniforms. They have to bring their own boots, thermal winter clothing, a jacket, and their own personal items. Uniforms, packs and all equipment are provided.
We will be accepting applications from now until shortly before the next academy in June. You may contact Sgt. Tygh Thompson for additional information at (503) 846-2744 or at tygh_thompon@co.washington.or.us.
